The football laundry playbook: from Friday night to the next practice
A practical reset for jerseys, base layers, and the gear bag after a long night under the lights.
Football creates two different laundry jobs: the uniform everyone sees and the base layers working underneath it. Give each its own place in your postgame routine so the next practice does not start with a search through a damp gear bag.
Start with the layers you can wash
At home, separate the jersey, pants, socks, and washable base layers from helmets, shoulder pads, and other equipment. Check the instructions for each item, including removable inserts. A machine-washable jersey does not mean the whole equipment bag can follow it into the washer.
Give names and numbers some attention
Look over the uniform before washing. Check the manufacturer’s instructions for printed numbers, fasteners, and team decorations. Nike’s jersey guidance recommends turning suitable jerseys inside out and washing gently in cold water. Keep that guidance secondary to the label on your actual uniform.
Plan for the short turnaround
Put the next clean practice set somewhere separate from the game uniform. If tomorrow’s session comes before everything can dry, have a spare base layer ready. The useful habit is unloading the bag as part of arriving home, before the uniform disappears into the weekend.

- Empty the gear bag.
- Sort clothing from protective equipment.
- Follow each item’s wash and dry instructions.
- Repack only dry gear.
Build your laundry routine
