A normal detergent tries to clean your clothes and scent them in a single step. To make the scent last, it leans on synthetic fragrance that bonds into the fibers. That fragrance seals body oil and bacteria under the surface. Your gear smells fine out of the dryer, then the funk comes back twenty minutes into a workout when heat and sweat release what's trapped.
So we split the two jobs and do them in order. Get the gear completely clean first. Add scent last, on top, and only if you want it. That reordering is the entire method.

Baking soda is one of five ingredients, and it does a real job: neutralizing odor and buffering pH. But it isn't what gets your gear clean. The enzyme blend does that.
