Gymnastics gear care: separate practice leotards from meet-day pieces
A careful approach to leotards, warmups, and the details that need special attention.
Gymnastics clothing can include stretch fabric, mesh, sparkle, printed decoration, and specialty finishes. Those details make the care label especially useful. The right routine for a basic practice shirt may not be the right routine for a competition leotard.
Start with the manufacturer’s directions
Check how the exact leotard should be washed and dried, including which products are permitted. Do not assume soaking or a standard detergent is appropriate for every finish. Follow any restrictions around embellishments, colors, and fabric treatments.
Sort the surrounding kit
Warmups and other washable practice layers may have different care needs from the leotard. Check each label and group compatible pieces. Keep grips, guards, bags, and specialist equipment on their own manufacturer-directed care schedule.
Plan before the meet
Check the competition set well ahead of departure, including small accessories and spare clothing. Allow time for the instructed cleaning and drying process. After the event, unpack completely so a used garment does not get mistaken for the next ready-to-wear set.
Your next-session checklist
- Read the exact leotard’s care label.
- Separate specialty finishes from basic practice wear.
- Keep equipment out of the clothing load.
- Check the full meet kit before packing.
Build your laundry routine
Start with the care label on each item and the directions on your detergent. Athlete Fresh Performance is a complete, unscented detergent for washable training clothes. Use the labeled dose and only on compatible fabrics. Revive is an optional restore soak where the garment instructions allow soaking; it is not an automatic step for every uniform or piece of equipment.
